I’m seeing white, fuzzy stuff on my broccoli sprouts. What’s up with that?

The good news: those are perfectly normal and natural, and in fact, solid evidence of healthy, growing sprouts. They’re most certainly edible, but if you like, you can run your sprouts under a little water and those cute, hairy rootlets will virtually disappear. The bad news? Well, there is no bad news.

I've heard sprouts weren’t always safe to eat. Has anything changed?

We were hoping you’d ask that. Yes, things have indeed changed. And, in fact, we’re pleased to tell you we played an important role in the change. Partnering with a subsidiary of Johns Hopkins University, we essentially reinvented the category with our own patented process called COLD-GROWN.® It uses very cold growing temperatures to eliminate any possible pathogens. Our innovative packaging then delivers the sprouts directly to you, the consumer, untouched until ‘harvested’ at home. We can’t speak for other purveyors, but since this new process began in 2016, there hasn’t been a single safety issue associated with Wild About Sprouts.

I see that Wild About Sprouts are untouched in the package. Do I still need to wash them?

Because our sprouts are untouched and grown directly in our "greenhouse" package, it's not necessary to wash them before consuming them. However, there's also no harm in giving your sprouts a quick rinse, especially if you encounter any ungerminated seeds (which quickly rinse away with the water).

If I cook with sprouts, am I cooking away all of their nutritional value?

Loss of nutrients is highly dependent upon the temperature and length of heat treatment. Some nutrients, such as B vitamins, vitamin C and folate are more sensitive to heat, and therefore could be lost during blanching, boiling or baking. On the other hand, glucoraphanin, the precursor of sulforaphane, is more heat-resistant, so if your sprouts are added to a stir fry, briefly microwaved, or lightly steamed, there's only minimal loss of glucoraphanin and several other key nutrients.
